3 Ways to Keep a Mobility Scooter in Good Shape

Posted on: 16 July 2020

If you're about to get a new mobility scooter, then it's worth getting into good habits from the start. As well as driving carefully and safely, you should get used to doing basic maintenance tasks to keep the scooter working well.

What should you do?

1. Keep the Scooter Clean and Dry

Keeping your scooter clean doesn't just ensure that it looks good, it also helps you keep it in good working order. If you let a mobility scooter get dirty, then dust, small stones, and bits of leaves will stick to the scooter. They could get into its working parts where they could cause some damage.

For example, if dust gets inside the scooter, then it could heat up when the scooter is running. This heat could transfer to parts and make them hotter than they should be. Dust and dirt can also cause clogs and blockages.

You should also take care not to let your scooter stay wet. While a rain shower might not do any harm at the time, you don't want water left on the scooter. This could lead to rust and internal problems if water gets inside the engine or battery.

So, make sure to clean your scooter regularly and dry it off if it gets wet. It's worth investing in a cover to keep the scooter clean and dry when you aren't using it.

2. Keep the Battery Charged

If you use your mobility scooter every day, then you'll soon get into the habit of keeping it charged. You don't want it to run out of battery power when you're out and about.

However, if you won't use your scooter regularly, then you might forget to charge it as often as you should. You might simply give it a boost every now and then before you use it.

Your battery will last longer and give you longer charge cycles if you keep it charged all the time. Even if you won't use the scooter for a few days, it's worth keeping it fully charged anyway. This keeps the battery working correctly. It will also last for longer.

3. Keep to a Regular Servicing Schedule

While you can spot major problems with a mobility scooter, some problems won't be so obvious. Some develop over time, and you won't know that they are there until something goes wrong. This can be dangerous. For example, if your brakes have a problem, then you might not notice this until they fail.

To keep on top of these problems, make sure that you have your scooter serviced to the manufacturer's schedule. This extends the life of the scooter and helps you avoid unnecessary repair bills and accidents.
