Tips When Painting an Accent Wall in Your Home

If house painters are refreshing the walls of your house to give it a new look, why not paint an accent wall for extra interest? Here are some tips.

Exercise Creative Freedom

Accent walls provide a lot of freedom in colour choices, allowing you to splash out with your favourite bold hue. Because the accent area is limited, they're easy to paint over if you want a change in the future. On the other hand, when you select a wall colour for an entire room or house, you might feel unadventurous, so you don't end up with something you don't like. Because an accent wall is quick to update, you can be more daring.

The limited coverage of an accent wall also lets you paint an intense hue without overpowering a room. You could opt for a deep, dark red that you love but wouldn't want everywhere.

Target Transition Areas

Transition spaces like a hallway present the perfect spot for a unique accent hue. You typically walk through these places rather than spend time in them. This opens up more options. You don't have to worry about whether the accent wall in a hallway is calming, but you can prioritise drama instead. You could choose a deep orange or a brilliant yellow in the hallway. Don't, however, overlook the rest of the house. Pick a colour that harmonises with the nearby rooms, so you feel a sense of unity as you walk around.

Include Trim and Door

A wall consists not only of the flat plaster area. It also has a door and trims, and you can cover these features with an accent colour. This will increase the drama as the unique colour will cover more areas. And it will create a sense of the unexpected and unusual. The trim and door often contrast against the wall colour, and you're doing something different.

Echo a Colour

If you feel indecisive about the accent wall colour, pick a hue several shades darker than the adjoining walls for a harmonious look. Or echo a colour in the room, say on a rug or painting. However, don't repeat too much of one colour to avoid blandness. For example, if you have a beige couch and carpet, choose a contrasting, more exciting shade for the accent wall, which will give the entire room a lift. Ask your painters for their suggestions on an accent colour.
